Errors in the use of Modals

Errors in the use of Modals:  The verbs can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must and ought are called modal vers or modals.

A) To make a request : use can or could

  • Should you please give me the doctor’s telephone number?  (Incorrect)
  • Could you please give me the doctor’s telephone number?  (Correct)
  • B)  To express necessity or compulsion :  use  must, have to

  • We should slow down while driving in front of a school.  (Incorrect)
  • We must slow down while driving in front of a school.  (Correct)
  • C)   Use the modal verb as is :   Don’t change its form to turn it into the present, future, or past forms. Don’t add anything to it. You can’t add s, ed, or ing

  • Jai cans swim.  (Incorrect)
  • Jai can swim.  (Correct)
  • He mights go to sleep.  (Incorect)
  • He might go to sleep.  (Correct)
  • D)    If you need to use modals in the negative form, then use only “not” AFTER the modal verb  :  Don’t add any extra words anymore.

  • You should not drink too much.  (Correct)
